Design That Works!Archive for Montgomery Art Guild
News!!
I know it has been a while, I have been quite busy!!! After starting at Michael’s as the Floral Designer, I have hardly had time to blog. So what’s been goin’ on?
I have been working on re-inventorying the local Michael’s with new arrangements. I think I have gotten up to 2 arrangements an hour where it was taking me an hour and a half before. It really helps knowing where things are and what I can and can not do. I have steadily been taking pics too, which I will start uploading on a seperate page called “Floral Design”.
I have also been working on some fine art pieces that I will be entering into several local art shows coming up soon. One of which, the Regions Bank show, I have already entered and was able to get one piece in.
The others will be the Riverfront show and the Prattauga show. I was really surprised I got in, seeing as how my work was a little bit more modern than what is typically shown. So I am so siked!
This past weekend I went to a good friends 30th bday party. It was pretty great. I drank ALOT and danced ALOT and well…lets just say acted as nutty as possible and can only recall bits and pieces.
BUT, great party non the less. I bought my friend this shirt http://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/detail/3813 and this set of earrings http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27850594.
My birthday celebrations are coming up as well and I am thinking about doing a year long art project to mark the year
It has been done by other artists, but I liked the thought of making myself do the work and at the end of my 30th year I will have aprox 365 artworks….IF I do it!! lol Which I CAN do it, it doesn’t take me long to make something, it’s just finding the time and making myself.

Newest Project
A few years ago….ok, 6 years ago I did 3 pieces that were basically Pen and Ink crosshatch portraits of various family members. The first I won honorable mention in the MAG Nightingale Exhibition and has (unfortunately) been lost. This is all I have left of it….this pic:

It is of my aunt Gina and her daughter Kaylin at Christmas 2000-2001. Shortly after I completed these two pieces:

(Above) This is of my cousins (left to right) Abby, Katie, and Lara Beth.

(Above) This is of my cousin Sandra bathing a baby in the kitchen sink.
What I loved most about these is that they are real life images of family and children. I also LOVE doing crosshatch, which is why I did them so large. They are along 24″ x 32″ in size, give or take. After coming across another pic of some of my family, I decided to try another….

This one will be (again) of Abby and Lara Beth, but with their older brother Nick. I was so taken with the image, I asked my cousin Dee if it was o.k. for me to use the image and she was happy to oblige. So now I am doing the preliminary work….I grid the image (because I will essentially be redrawing it larger) and print it out in 3 versions (color, bw, cutout bw). I do this because I will be recreating it in bw/grey scale…so I find it helpful to see the basic shades of grey in a cutout shape, then in basic bw which provides a little more detail, and then the full color for additional details. I will probably do this one in a larger size too, I think it shows off the crosshatch better. I have done smaller, but details are usually lost.

I am AGAIN becoming a member of MAG…I seem to be a member only when I enter shows and then when I don’t enter shows I fall off the face of the earth. ANYWAY, found their site HERE and have decided to bite the bullet and mail off my $40 membership fee. If you have never been a member, I really liked it. I enjoyed the monthly newsletter which is very informative of local events. They do leave it open to become really involved. I think there is a small fee for entering info into the newsletter. The downside is the lack of younger artists, which even…40 and younger would be an improvement. Maybe if I get the nerve I can get involved enough to suggest marketing memberships to that demographic. Alot of retired professors from the area are members and are very involved.
Also looking into SAC’s…which again is another great group of artists with a lack in younger artist involvement. It really bothers me how we do have alot of younger talented artists in the area, but they are no where to be seen!! Where are you people?!?! I know you’re not a retired sunday afternoon painter, but STILL you have something to give!! Our area needs younger artists…we need a creative society that builds off of each other!
OK OK, enough ranting. It’s late, gotta hot date!! ![]()
